Texas Legislature Must Enact Interstate Compacts for Multiple Health Professions Serving Neurodivergent Texans
01.17.2025
Texas is facing shortages to attract professionals such as social workers who serve a critical need for neurodivergent Texans.
AUSTIN, TX – The Texas Tribune reported on January 16, 2025 relating to proposals filed by the Texas Legislature to have The Lone Star State join nine interstate compacts for various health professions including counselors and social workers. Americans for Autism Advocacy issues the following comment:
“Texas lawmakers are beginning the 2025 legislative session focused on improving access to various health professionals that serve the neurodivergent community in The Lone Star State. Texas currently has the third worst shortage of social workers in the United States. Neighboring states such as Arkansas, Louisiana, and Oklahoma have taken action to join interstate compacts for licensed counselors while Texas is falling behind. Despite Texas being a member of Psychology Interjurisdictional Compact, more needs to be done to increase health care access. Texas lawmakers must enact The Counseling Compact along with the Social Work Licensure Compact in swift fashion and without delay. Members of both the Texas House of Representatives and the Texas Senate need to listen to their constituents and not to special interest groups who continue to embrace a territorial attitude that prevents much needed health care innovation.”
