05.26.2026
U.S. Department of Education Investigation puts Board Members of the Largest Public School District in Texas on Notice. Board Members Must honor Houston ISD’s Obligation to Special Education Students or Resign from Office.
OCONOMOWOC, WISC. – The Houston Independent School District (Houston ISD) Board of Education has been the subject of national media attention for planning to separate students with disabilities from the rest of the student population. Americans for Autism Advocacy issues the following comment:
“Members of the Houston ISD Board of Education is feeling the heat, but in the words of legendary U.S. Senator Everett Dirksen will they see the light? Right now, they are not seeing the light as families of Houston ISD students and taxpayers are taking offense to the board’s plan to separate special education students from the rest of the student population. The Individuals with Disabilities in Education (IDEA) Act is without exception as all students with disabilities are afforded an opportunity to a free and appropriate education in the least restrictive environment possible. Each member of the Houston ISD board has a moral obligation to uphold the district’s responsibilities to uphold the IDEA Act. Shame on every member of the Houston ISD board who thinks otherwise. Houston ISD board members have two choices: uphold federal law or resign from their positions in shame.”
