Americans for Autism Advocacy Statement Condemning the Assassination of Former Minnesota House Speaker Melissa Hortman

PAUL, MINN. –  Former House Speaker of the State of Minnesota Melissa Hortman and her husband Mark were tragically killed on the morning of Saturday May 14, 2025. The alleged suspect Vance Bolterwas arrested on the evening of April 15, 2025, without incident. Americans for Autism Advocacy (AFAA) issues the following statement condemning this savage act:

“The board of directors for Americans for Autism Advocacy believes that respectful dialogue with elected officials, regardless of political affiliation, is essential for legislative change. AFAA unequivocally condemns the assassination of former House Speaker Melissa Hortman, emphasizing that violence has no place in the legislative and political systems of Minnesota and the United States. Her death represents a profound loss for responsible leadership in addressing the pervasive fraud impacting autism programs in Minnesota. AFAA extends its deepest condolences to Governor Tim Walz, House Speaker Lisa Demuth, Senate Majority Leader Erin Murphy, and all Minnesotans. We urge all participants in Minnesota’s legislative process to honor the respectful approach Melissa Hortman brought to her work. She will be truly missed.”
